The organisers of Dorset’s traditional Knob Throwing Festival have confirmed that the competition will not go ahead this year because of ongoing safety fears surrounding the coronavirus pandemic. The festival is a tradition in Dorset, the event, coupled with the Frome Valley Food Festival, has a number of competitions featuring the Dorset Knob, a traditional biscuit, one such competition is to see who can throw the biscuits as far as possible.
Speaking about the announcement, Ian Gregory, chair of the Dorset Knob Throwing Committee, told the BBC that the festival it had been affected by Covid-19 restrictions, but that it has been scheduled to return to Cattistock in May 2022.
Among the festivities on the day is a food festival, live music and knob-based games, such as knob-and-spoon racing, splat the knob, knob darts, and pin the knob on the Cerne Abbas giant. Players also battle to eat as many knobs as possible in record time. While it is a shame not to be able to enjoy this Dorset tradition for another year, we’re sure that the event will be bigger and better than ever when it returns in 2022.
