Cream Teas & Thatched Cottages – Tea Clipper Tea Rooms

When Kathy and Alastair Beaven were looking for a house that also had holiday accommodation, little did they know they would end up buying one with a tearoom attached as well.

Kathy originally from Essex and Alastair originally from Trowbridge, met and lived in Preston, Lancashire. In 2009 they decided it was time to move back down south, to be closer to their family.

The house they purchased in 2018 is in the beautiful and popular tourist destination, Milton Abbas. It is one of the 36 identical thatched cottages. Inside was an old tearoom, that hadn’t been open for at least 10 years .

Even with both having day jobs, they worked flat out over the summer of 2018. Completely refurbishing the tearoom (awarded a 5 Star Health rating) and the two luxury cottages that are situated behind the house, these are ideal for families, walkers etc. They opened the tearoom and accommodation in November 2018.

They decided to keep the original name of the tearoom ‘Tea Clipper’, which went down well with the other villagers. Currently they are only open on Saturdays and Sundays, but they are hoping to also open on Fridays as the season builds up. When the season really kicks off, they will enlist their two teenage children and their friends to join the team.

Where possible they like to use all Dorset produce and they obviously use Clipper Tea. Alastair makes cakes, sweet and savoury scones and bread rolls, while Kathy is the soup maker. They sell freshly made bacon rolls, toasted sandwiches, soups and of course cakes, lots of cake. There is even a selection of vegan, gluten and nut free cakes.

You should pay them a visit and enjoy their Dorset Cream teas. Then for that special occasion, a full Afternoon tea – Why not book a table for Mothers Day, just £20 for an Afternoon Tea for two, includes finger sandwiches, mini cakes and a Dorset Cream Tea – advanced bookings only.
