As we start heading into September, you’ll notice more autumnal flavours appearing on menus and in shops. Here are some of the foods you can expect to find in season throughout September.
The big ones this season are:
- Apples
- Cauliflower
- Mushrooms
- Swede
- Figs
- Onions
- Shallots
- Savoy Cabbage
In terms of fruit, there are a host of things to choose from including Bramley apples, apricots. Blackberries, plums and pears. You’ll also find melons, blueberries and raspberries as their season starts to wind down.
For vegetables it is a real colourful affair at this time of year, artichokes, aubergines, beetroots, broad beans, butternut squash and carrots all come into season in September. You’ll also find celeriac, kale, leeks, peas, potatoes and pumpkins becoming more prevalent at this time of year.
As autumn draws in, it’ll be more tempting to have a nice comforting meal full of warm flavours and if you’re a fan of roasts, you’ll find plenty of meat to choose from including duck, goose and venison. Make sure to visit these meat producers for the best in locally caught, seasonal meat.
For those of you who prefer fish, this is a great time of year for a host of fish and seafood. Crabs, mussels and scallops are all in season in September as well as haddock, mackerel, salmon and sardines. You can find fish and seafood caught locally here.
