Discover the history of Mapperton this summer

Explore the family home of the Earl and Countess of Sandwich this summer and visit Mapperton House, their Dorset base when their tours begin in July.

Mapperton is a glorious sandstone manor house, complete with a romantic valley garden in the heart of Dorset and surrounded by unspoiled countryside. The house has fifteen acres of gardens, which descend from the family croquet lawn and a formal topiary down to a wild garden. It was named Historic Houses Garden of the Year for 2020 and is a delightful place to spend a few hours. The Gardens and onsite café are open Sunday to Thursday, 11am until 5pm. House tours restart on 5th July, with four tours a day starting from midday, tours must be prebooked in advance and are a unique opportunity to see the extensive Montagu family collection and a real insight into the lives of the Earl and Countess

The earliest mention of the house is from the Domesday Book in 1086, when it was known as Malperetone. Since 1955, it has been the home of the Earl and Countess of Sandwich, who bought their collection of family heirlooms and antiques with them when they moved from their former home near Huntingdon.

Tickets for house tours and visits to the garden should be booked in advance, you can find out more here.
