If you stop by any of the Hive Café sites at West Bay, West Bexington or Burton Bradstock and order takeaway, you’ll receive your order in a brand new 100% biodegradable packaging – this first of its kind to be used in Dorset.
Hive are the first in Dorset to join the Not-Plastic revolution with these great new boxes from Notpla. They’re 100% biodegradable as they use seaweed and plant extracts to line the boxes instead of the harmful materials that are often used. The boxes biodegrade in as little as 4 – 6 weeks.

To launch the new packaging, a special lunchtime celebration was held at the Hive Beach Café at Burton Bradstock, where 20 boxes of fish and chips were given away and an award was presented by Bridport’s Mayor.
The Mayor and Mayoress of Bridport, Ian and Anne Bark, were invited to the Hive to help them celebrate the launch of the new boxes, as they are committed to reducing waste and they both thoroughly approved! The Mayor also presented the Hive’s operational manager, Andrew Hartley and Executive Chef, Lews Ford with two Plastic Free Champion Awards, with one for the Hive and the other to their sister site, The Club House at West Bexington. The awards are from Surfers Against Sewage and is given to businesses that take steps to remove at least three items of single use plastics from their everyday operations. For example, swapping plastic straws with paper ones or plastic forks with bamboo alternatives.

Mayor Ian Bark said: “When I become Mayor, one of the first things I did was to target Bridport to become a plastic free community. What the Hive Beach Company have done for removing plastics and being environmentally friendly is great, as well as the support you give people at the beach cleans, with free tea and coffee, in recyclable cups!, which all helps to oil the wheels.”
The new boxes seemed to go down just as well as the fish and chips themselves. Subscribers to the Hive’s newsletters were invited to the celebration, with one visitor heading to social media to say: “Sometimes it is worth checking your email – very happy customers!”
