Healthy snacking guide

If you are someone that needs tasty snacks to get through the day but at the same time want to keep an eye on your health and limit the amount of sugar and salt in your diet, here are some suggestions of healthy snacks you can easily pull together and enjoy while out and about exploring Dorset.

Snacks for an energy boost

Most of us reach for the snacks when we’re feeling a little tired but chances are, you’re a little low on B12 rather than actually needing sleep or sugar. B12 is produced by animals, which is why some vegetarians and vegans take supplements but you can also find it in cereals and eggs.

Options:
Eggs
Fish
Cheese
Meat

You could always boil a couple of eggs to snack on but if that is a bit much why not coat some seeds in marmite or the flavouring of your choice and roast for around 15 minutes to create a wonderful snack that you can carry around for days afterwards?

Snacks to keep you full

If you love snacking but want to cut down, you should focus on foods that are full of fibre, these really help with keeping you fuller for longer and having a little extra in your diet can only be a good thing. Apparently, the majority of adults in the UK are eating 10g less than the daily recommended dose of fibre, so these healthy snacks will not only be tasty but will also help with upping your recommended daily dose!

Options:
Beans
Lentils
Rye
Crispbread
Oats
Popcorn
Fruit

For those on the go, you can grab a bag of popcorn or a savoury bag of beans or corn, something you can find in most delis these days. If you have a bit more time, why not spread almond or peanut butter on a rye bread or something similar and top with some banana or apple slices?

Snacks to help you get your 5 a day

It can be difficult to eat five varieties of fruit and veg a day and we can often find ourselves just grabbing an apple and wondering why being healthy is so boring. There is also the issue that fresh fruit and veg can be expensive and doesn’t last as long as other options on the snack aisle – did you know that frozen fruit and veg can contain more nutrients than the fresh ones? That’s because they are frozen within hours of being picked! Plus, you won’t miss the ice cream as much on a hot day when you have a bowl of frozen fruit to enjoy!

Options:
A piece of fruit like an apple or orange counts as 1 of your five a day or 80g of tinned or frozen fruit or veg  – that’s about a handful.

If you have a little more time, why not grab a gem lettuce and empty some tinned sweetcorn or beans into them with a few tomatoes for a fresh and healthy snack? Or for those with a sweet tooth, grab some berries and sprinkle over a bit of cinnamon and a little lemon juice. This can be kept in a tupper wear box and eaten throughout the day too.
