Hot dogs with cider onions

If Covid is still keeping you away from big gatherings and firework night events, but still want to experience the atmosphere, give these hot dogs with cider onions a go while watching your local display from the comfort of your own garden!

Ingredients:

30g butter
1 tbsp olive oil
2 finely sliced onions
100 ml dry cider
1 tbsp dark brown soft sugar
1 tbsp cider vinegar
1 tbsp Dijon mustard
2 tbsp mayonnaise
4 sausages
4 buns

You can make these gluten free or vegetarian/vegan by making a few easy substitutions, like swapping the buns and choosing sausages and sauces to suit you.

Grab olive oil from a local company here and find tasty Dorset sausages here. You can get your hot dog buns from one of the region’s bakeries and your cider here. Find the rest of the ingredients at a deli or farm shop, see a list of businesses here.

Method:

Start by melting the butter in a pan and add the olive oil. Once hot, add the onions and fry for 25-30 minutes or until caramelised.

While caramelising the onions, cook the sausages following the instructions on the packaging.

Add the cider and simmer until reduced. Stir in the sugar and vinegar.

On a separate bowl, mix the mustard and mayonnaise, set aside.

Prepare the hot dog buns and place a sausage in each one. Top with the onions and the mustard-mayo mix and enjoy!
