Stout and apple bread | World Apple Day recipes

As World Apple Day is taking place on 21st October and we all know how much Dorset apples are loved around the UK, we thought we’d put together a series of recipes all featuring the humble apple.

Make sure to keep up to date on our latest recipes here.

This is an easy bread to make with chunks of apple, it’s dense and moist and makes a great treat to enjoy with tea.

Ingredients:

60g butter
1 large apple
175g plain flour
450g wholemeal flour
90g oatmeal
2.5 tsp bicarb of soda
4tbsp muscovado sugar
175ml good quality stout
5 tbsp treacle
400ml buttermilk

You can get the majority of these ingredients from farm shops all over the county. For the best stout, take a look at our drinks producers here.

Methods:

Start by preheating your oven to 180c or gas mark 4. Butter your loaf tins.

Peel, core and dice your apple and toss it with 2 tbsp of plain flour, mix the flours and oatmeal with 1 tsp salt and bicarbonate of soda add the butter and rub it in with your fingers. Stir in the sugar.

Make a well in the middle of the mixture and slowly pour in the stout followed by the treacle and then the buttermilk. Mix the liquids with a knife as they are added and combine with the floured apple, but be careful not to overmix.

Divide the mixture into loaf tins and bake for up to 40 minutes.

Top tip – not sure if your bread is ready? Take it out of the tin and tap the bottom, if it sounds hollow, it’s ready! If not, put it back in the oven for a little longer.
