The Baking Bird – Lizzie Crow creates specialty home baked and hand made goods, making the most of the wealth of fantastic produce available here in Dorset.
Lizzie has been cooking and baking since she was knee high to a grasshopper and says “I used to plague my mother’s baking days by “helping” and I use that term loosely. The over kneaded grey pastry jam tarts were always a favourite. My best ever memory of true baking success was when I was about 3 or 4 years old and I made fairy cakes with my long suffering Mum. My Dad came home from work and I was so excited … Dad took a bite and rolled on his back with his arms and legs in the air to play dead – I just KNEW he loved them. These days the baking has improved a bit, but the philosophy is much the same – I hope my baking makes people smile!”
Today, you will find an amazing selection of hand-made seasonal breads, pastries, bakes, savouries, biscuits, puddings and wherever Lizzie’s imagination takes her. But you can guarantee that it’s Dorset through and through.
Just about everything Lizzie produces is cooked, made and baked in the bakery, which is nestled on David Foot’s Higher Ashton Farm, right in the middle of the countryside (on Goulds Hill). Lizzie loves seeing the wildlife including hares and deer and watching the cattle! But as she says – “I cook a bit too!”
Lizzie makes the most of local produce and is often found foraging for wild garlic, elderflower, blackberries, sloes and more.
With an emphasis on using the very best of seasonal, local produce, you can often find her at a variety of Dorset Farmers’ Markets, Food Festivals and other events with her range of baked goods.
When it comes to cakes and biscuits, Lizzie says: “I make just about anything, from cheese cakes to yule logs and mince pies to everyone’s favourites like rock cakes, chocolate brownies and flapjacks. My bread ranges from focaccia to rolls and I often have a variety of pies, quiches and other pastries on offer at local events. You can find a full list of the events I’m appearing at on my website, so take a look and visit me for a treat!”
