Based in the historic Old Fish Market on Custom House Quay, we’re Weymouth’s traditional harbourside fishmonger, with counters piled high with the finest Dorset fish and shellfish, landed daily on the quayside, right outside our shop.
Weyfish’s recently refurbished counters are piled high with the freshest Dorset fish and shellfish, landed daily on Custom House Quay, right outside the shop. The clear waters of the Dorset coast are home to some of Britain’s finest seafood, and the daily catch brings in delicious Portland crab and lobster, magnificent line-caught sea bass, mackerel and pollack and netted sole, turbot, brill and plaice, as well as wonderful oysters, mussels and hand-dived scallops. With over 40 local species, from john dory to billy winters, the truth is, you never know quite what the tide will bring in.
In the shop, you’ll find Steve Abbott and Tim Withers, both highly-skilled, experienced fishmongers who’ve worked at Weyfish their entire careers. There’s craft and artistry in everything they do, whether it’s preparing your favourites or helping to select something different for a special occasion. They’ll be quick to answer your questions or offer some expert advice on making the most of the day’s catch.
Locally-caught, sustainable seafood
Weyfish is a community business, proud of its produce and its West Country provenance, with strong ties to the local fishing fleet. Fishing has been central to Weymouth’s economy and culture for generations. Today, the majority of the town’s fleet are day boats, fishing the inshore waters with lines, nets and pots – the most sustainable fishing methods, producing very little by-catch or discards. Most boats are owner-operated, landing their daily catch to us and we’re very much part of that community too: the Weyfish Boat Company operates two inshore boats for bass and shellfish.
2020 has brought challenging times for small businesses in Weymouth as elsewhere, but throughout the pandemic, Weyfish has kept its doors open. The business has been an important lifeline for the fisher community guaranteeing a market for all local boats while expanding to serve new customers in the South Dorset area with ‘COVID-safe’ contactless home deliveries. Indeed the deliveries have proved so popular the service has become a permanent one, and Weyfish will also soon by offering fresh Dorset seafood deliveries nationwide.
Regenerating The Old Fish Market
The introduction of home deliveries is just the latest development in what has already been a very busy year for Weyfish. The regeneration of The Old Fish Market is something of a private passion for Weyfish owners Sean Cooper and Bob Hope, who see the building not so much as a convenient harbourside location as a community asset they have a responsibility to maintain. After several months’ renovation work, Weyfish opened its all new, modernised and much expanded retail premises this March, as well as introducing a new retail trailer bringing fresh seafood to Dorchester during lockdown as well as opening the Hatch on the Harbour, a commercial kitchen serving a range of tempting seafood bites on the quayside. Plans for a more ambitious destination restaurant venue, under the original clerestory roof of The Old Fish Market, are also beginning to take shape.
You’ll find Weyfish at 1 Custom House Quay, on the Weymouth harbourside, open 7 days a week, Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm, and Sundays from 10am to 4pm.
