As one of the best gardens in England, Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens are award-winning and covering 30 acres. Famous for its camellias, rhododendrons and hydrangeas, this grade one listed garden has a wonderfully exotic atmosphere, coupled with stunning views across the Jurassic Coast, and is located close to the picturesque historic village of Abbotsbury where the well-known Abbotsbury Swannery can also be found.
Established in 1765, the gardens have been the site of many plant introductions to UK, including the first camellias, which came to Great Britain in 1792 and are now magnificent tree groves! The gardens have changed hugely since the land was first developed with the creation of the monastery that once dominated the village and the Fox-Strangeways family who leased the land and converted the former monastery into a mansion. These days, the garden is a mixture of formal and informal flowers and still retains much of its Victorian influence.
At the heart of the Garden is the Coffee Shop with its splendid veranda which overlooks the sunken garden, other facilities also include a plant centre and gift shop which are both accessible without paying entry to the gardens. Well-behaved dogs are welcomed throughout the garden as well as at the Coffee Shop onsite.
Open every day, except Christmas and New Year, there are a range of regular events taking place throughout the year as well as a number of private functions. One of the top events that takes place annually is the Abbotsbury Food Fair which is held every Spring.
With free parking and incredible views, Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens make a wonderful destination for a day trip for the whole family and for a host of private functions. The Garden Pavilion for instance is a superb wedding venue and is fully licensed for a variety of ceremonies. Get in touch with the team for up-to-date opening times and to enquire about private functions.
